• The present breed of digital cameras uses two important technologies for capturing the images and these are the CCD and CMOS sensors. CCD stands for charge coupled device while CMOS is an abbreviation for complementary metal oxide semiconductor. These two things are kinds of sensors, which can convert the light into electrons and both work with this same theory.
• Grossly speaking, the CMOS image sensors are cheaper than the CCD sensors as they are less expensive to manufacture.
• Each of the sensors consists of millions of tiny solar cells, which can transform the light reflected from the image into electrons. The manner in which the two systems work is slightly different in their technologies. A
• After the light is reflected into the CCD, the electrons are transported over the array of solar cells and the reading is done at one corner. The digital converted helps in converting the pixel value into a digital value. In case of CMOS, the light is transferred using traditional wires into each solar cell so that the pixel is converted and amplified in a single solar cell. The reading in this variety is on an individual basis.
• The manufacturing process of the two sensors is different. The light sensitivity in CCDs is quite high and remains undistorted. The CMOS chips are made as most other microprocessors and there are a lot of differences between the two types.
• CCD sensors have a high quality images without interference of the noise, while the CMOS sensors are more distorted if there is noise.
• Due to the presence of transistors near to the sensors, the digitisation of light is less sensitive in case of CMOS than in CCDs.
• Power consumption in case of CMOS is less than the CCD which is usually 100 times less because of the manner in which both the sensors function.
• Making of CMOS chips is possible on silicon platforms, which makes them less expensive while the CCD chips are more advanced and need more sophistication to be produced, making them costlier.

Over the years, these two types of chips namely CCD and CMOS used in the digital cameras have undergone advancements with a result that the quality of pictures is almost the same in both types. Although CCD devices have a better quality output, their battery life and cost is higher than those digital cameras using CMOS chips.
